Review on 🎧 MOTOROLA MH003: Boost Your Mobile Experience with the Motorola Boom 2 Wireless Headset by John Bennett

Significant drop in sound quality from previous models

I've owned many Bluetooth headsets from Motorola over the years, including some Boom-style headsets, and I've been quite impressed with their quality. Unless you're willing to spend big, it's difficult to strike a good balance between price and value. Prior to this release, Motorola and its licensed manufacturers were mostly pretty good in my opinion. This device does not meet the requirements. Fit and finish on par with previous models. Boom-style flip-outs are inherently fragile, but I only keep a few spares in stock (which is why I picked the Boom 2 in the first place). The problem is the sound quality. The mic volume is nowhere near sensitive or powerful enough, and the audio heard by people I speak to borders on distortion. I did a sound quality comparison test with another headset (HX600) and the Boom 2 sounded terrible in parallel tests. I tried using the Boom 2 during a business call and other participants complained that I sounded too far from the mic and a bit underwater. I switched back to my HX600 and voila, no more complaints. During my test calls, the speaker sounded tinny and distant compared to the HX600 - to the point of missing parts of an ongoing conversation. This too was unacceptable. Another unfortunate discovery came when I called Boom 2 support. To be fair, the support staff were polite despite being totally reliant on inadequate troubleshooting scenarios. After playing around with it for almost an hour, they finally realized that there's actually no way to adjust anything other than the volume and mute settings on the Boom 2 device. It is not even possible to reset the device to restore it to the original factory settings. Essentially, this means you can never erase the Boom 2's storage from known devices.

Pros
  • Sturdy build
Cons
  • So-so
