Our cat removes the collars with plastic fasteners immediately after regular grooming. This kind of safety collar with buckle and elastic piece is much safer. Putting a small zip tie over the buckle after it's on your cat will prevent it from escaping. After about 6 months of use on our cat, the elasticated protection area began to thin and it was time to replace it with a new collar. I find the bell annoying, but it's fairly easy to remove with pliers to reveal the metal ring that holds the collar. that's for the collar, so I don't consider that a big minus.
