This insect repellent does two jobs. It is VERY effective as a manual insect repellent. No need to swing or hit hard, even if you hit the wing, the insect will be knocked to the ground. But this is how the zapper really shines as a standalone automatic zapper. I can't sleep with stubborn flies or mosquitoes roaming my room at night, but I hate getting up and chasing an intruder. With this zapper, all I have to do is plug in the charging cable, flip the switch to auto (which turns on a low-intensity lamp to attract bugs), and place it on the small stand. Bugs seem to be more attracted to it than I am and I sleep soundly. After using it as a flashlight, you must turn off the device and let it charge before you can use it in manual mode again. However, this is an acceptable compromise to keep the bug killer light.
