Brightness on camera and photo

The setting is good but I don't know why it should be light for a while and then dark. I don't know how to keep it light. I'm doing my hair and I need light but it's not really giving me what I need. This might be an easy fix, but I'm not sure what to do to keep the brightness high without dulling. Set up was easy got a bit confused but watched the video and it helped.
