After years of loyal service it's finally time to retire my old Logitech M510. Years of video gaming, office work, and general violence have taken their toll. The left mouse button no longer registers a hold, but only repeats the click. The scroll wheel now skips all other scrolling movements. The rubber pads on the sides are worn out from thousands of hours of use. And that was about it. Everything else still works great! It is really incredible. This thing survived a player's button press in Call of Duty and World of Warcraft raids and was thrown on a table in desperation. He has survived countless times when my cat knocked him off the table just because he is a cat and therefore an idiot. It survived 3 moves in the city, was unceremoniously thrown into a moving box to be unpacked later. And yet it's still going great. It registers clicks (except for the retention issue). Batteries still last forever. It's still easy. is working. I won't even throw it away. It will live in an old computer drawer as a backup in case my cat strikes again. So when it came time to fire my old friend, I had a hard time finding a suitable replacement for him. I checked out the new offerings from Logitech. Many of these were offers aimed at gamers. I looked at wired mice because of the latency. I even tried one of these new vertical mice (Anker AK-98ANWVM-UBA 2.4G Wireless Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse, 800/1200/1600 dpi, 5 Buttons - Black). I liked it but there were glitches (see my review for details). In the end I didn't find anything suitable. Everything was either huge with 37 buttons that I would never use, or oddly shaped. Then I understood. What I was looking for was no improvement over my old M510. It was the new M510. But maybe a new color. Metallic gray is getting old! So here I am with my shiny (or rather non-shiny) new M510 in beautiful cranberry red, and I have to say I have a few complaints. They changed a few things that I might or might not like. The texture of the red details is now matte, a bit grainy. In fact, I like it better than the shiny old 510 that attracted every finger smudge imaginable. Another thing I noticed is that the scroll wheel rotation isn't as precise as the old wheel. It's a lot rougher. It seems that they have dropped in the price of materials for the wheel. Only time will tell if the legendary 2+ year battery life will hold up, but they include the batteries to get you started. And I should mention that the awful blister pack is now perforated for "tool-free" opening! But it's still sharp, so be careful! Otherwise it's still the same great M510. Tracking is accurate. The latency is extremely low for a wireless mouse. I'm a lucky tourist.
