Review on 🌈 RGBZONE DC5-24V Mini 21 Key RF Remote Controller for WS2811 WS2812B LED Dream Color Strip Light - Effortless Remote Control for Dynamic LED Lighting by Jennifer Kiel

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Excellent controller except FIRE

I really like this controller for its ease of use, variety of patterns and RF remote control; However, I'm rating it 1 star because it nearly started a fire. Dimming didn't work either, except in single color mode (e.g. no pattern). Regarding fire hazard, I used a 5VDC 15A power supply for a WS2812B RGB LED array (256 LEDs). The power supply has a recommended wattage for a 256 LED array, well below the 1024 LED limit for this controller. During use, the wires began to smoke after about 20-30 minutes of continuous use. I disabled the controller before the fire could break out, but if left unattended the results could have been disastrous. I did a little research. My PSU was outputting 5VDC at 15A and was unaffected. The LEDs were not damaged. The control board and the wiring from the board to the LED connector are not damaged. The damage appears to be limited to the power supply only, but that could be because I turned off the power so quickly. If I had reacted now, other components might have been damaged. The wiring hasn't been crimped, pinched, or altered in any way either. It was a 90 degree turn (2-3cm turning radius) which is a lot less than what the unit was packaged for when rotated 180 degrees. It looks like the solution is to simply use higher rated wiring. Note. I tried to determine the cable power but the markings were not enough to understand how much power they can carry. Controller board components cannot be individually defined. So the controller is nice and simple, but cannot keep the promised level. I don't know the limit but be aware of possible fire issues when using this controller.

Pros
  • Excellent design
Cons
  • For old
