Not the best deal but good value for money

I had a rather strange situation in my home: for a 45 lb Airedale Terrier who has now passed away with a new 9 lb -Jack used to have dog doors installed. Russell terrier puppy. The particular dog door in question was built into a heavy metal door that led from my garage to an outside paddock. The first and smaller door was too high off the ground for Jack Russell to use without acrobatics. Instead of replacing the door, I had the brilliant idea of installing an even larger door, but setting it much lower so that the smaller dog can easily use it. Installation was quite difficult as the metal door was difficult to cut through and the electric saw would not make straight cuts in the door. We had to use scissors, files, and multiple cuts to widen the opening for this door. The end result wasn't very pretty, but after we installed the door the inner and outer flanges covered 99% of our hole cutting errors and it looks good. We found the template less than useful, perhaps because cutting through a metal door was so tedious. The mounting holes for the supplied hardware did not match the actual door. In the end, new holes were drilled. The included mounting hardware is complete rubbish and we ended up using some sheet metal screws I had lying around and they did the job perfectly. The door itself is a little light but works well. The plastic door hatch itself didn't close very well initially, but after the dog's walked through it a half-dozen times it now seals well, leaving no large air gaps. Overall, for the price, this door is a good compromise between an even cheaper budget plastic door frame and one of those $200+ ultra dog doors for your Westminster Dog Show winner. The outer and inner mounting flanges are large enough to cover all but the most egregious installation mistakes, and it should look pretty good. My only caveat: don't bother drilling 6 holes in the template on each side as they probably won't line up with the holes in the actual door frame after you've made the cutout, unless your installation is much easier as our . was.
