Review on ROKR Wooden Educational Engineering Model - Self Assembly for Fun & Learning by Philip Lindsey

Revainrating 3 out of 5

fun building; poor quality

It was fun to build and the clock works well. Some specific comments: 1). Others note the poor quality of the cuts, they are not perfectly perpendicular. You are really, really bad. Some gear axes are so out of square that the gears lose contact and the clock stops. I've tried bending the axles so the gears are straight, but then the axle isn't perfectly centered and it still wobbles. 2). What I love about this set is the use of metal axles and plastic bushings. Some axles in other kits are toothpicks and don't spin as freely. This will make the clock run for a few minutes and then stop.3). The plywood is of very poor quality. Some parts fell apart during assembly. And whose idea was it to use VERY weak 1/8" plywood for the important supports that hold the clock together and give it rigidity? four). It would be nice if it had a big spring like 24 hours. Overall my assessment is that the ROKR kits are well constructed, they like the metal axles throughout, but the material and cut quality is significantly inferior to veneered MDF and perfectly vertical. Cuts used by other kit manufacturers. If someone could make a quality MDF/veneer kit with good design elements like metal axles, the whole world would walk to your door!
