Review on Stay Protected in the Great Outdoors with the Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap by Chris Castro

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Overall a very good hat, the cape could be a bit better

I was attracted to this hat because it looks like a regular hat without a detachable cape. Also because it is thin and apparently promotes sweating. It didn't disappoint on the above points, not a cape, it's a great hat and everything I could have hoped for (more on the cape below). I have a larger than average head (I have 7 3/8 - 8 caps) and size L , one of them fits me with no issues, I just had to raise it a bit more than the "middle" position, the "middle" " is where the adjustable Velcro folds right in the middle. It is very light, easy to wash and dries quickly. I only hand washed it but it says it can be machine washed in cold water. Now for the bad details. The "cloak" is not easy to remove and reattach. Since I don't often detach and reattach it, I don't care. You have to completely undo the velcro and pass it through the cape to reattach it and do the opposite to undo it. It's possible to skip the velcro and still use the cape, but it doesn't hold up as well with this method. , it may stick to other fabric parts of the hat and cut into the fabric causing it to tear a little. I learned this the hard way the first time I washed it with the velcro left open. From now on I will wash it with velcro, glue it so that the rough parts are not visible. Third, wearing a cape can make you noticeably warmer. So the trade-off is getting sunburned or sweating more. While the cons mentioned above seem like a long story, I just wanted to give them a more detailed account to help people decide if this hat is right for them. Overall I'm still very happy with the hat. The cape isn't the best design in my opinion, but it works well enough that I'm only deducting one star for that.

Pros
  • Good product for its price
Cons
  • Not bad overall but...
