Review on Enhance Your Baseball Skills with the SKLZ Lightning Bolt Pitching Machine by Paul Barnes

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Good concept but loud hum, possibly due to overvoltage

I made some tweaks and "fixed" my car to stop the loud hum. I hope someone at SKLZ can read this review and fix the product. As it is I would give the product 2 stars. With a small correction this is a 5 star product. My first block worked for 10 seconds and then made a loud crash that sounded like it was about to fall apart. After returning, the 2nd detachment did the same. The ball feeder on the second block was always on, despite the on/off switch setting. This has also been noticed by other reviewers. My guess is bad soldering on the switch. What does "loud knocking" mean? Measured with a decibel meter (no phone app) at a distance of one foot, the unit was originally 68 decibels. After a loud knock, the sound was 88 decibels. This is the lawnmower volume. It sounds even worse because if the lawn mower rumbled like it was about to break into pieces, you would run away. Also, it was surprisingly quick. Using radar I found the speed is up to 50 miles per hour. Hm. So this is a device that's supposed to reach speeds of 30 miles per hour. It currently rumbles like crazy and shoots at 50 mph. He already has an electrical problem (Ball Feeder), maybe another? Maybe the governor isn't working and is spinning too fast, which explains both the 50 mph and the knocking? As an experiment - although please note that this is NOT recommended, this is not supported, this is not guaranteed safe and can damage things including your product so please do not try it yourself - I used a multi-voltage transformer to change the voltage from 6 volts (which corresponds to the supplied transformer) down to 3 volts. The results were as follows: 3.0V: 27 mph, 63 decibels (constant) 4.5V: 36 mph, 68 decibels (occasional louder hum) 6.0V: 50 mph, 88 decibels (hum). confused with the voltage of the transformer. Should it be 3 volts? - If it really is 6 volts, find out why 3 volts is a workaround for some devices; What's the real problem? - upgrade the unit with a speed switch (perhaps by changing the voltage) or - sell a multi-speed SKLZ transformer specifically for use with this blitz machine - some sound isolation of the unit may help. It's also possible that somewhere along the way, the wrong power supplies were plugged into the box.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • There are flaws
