Very satisfied so far. The SoundLink II has a nice, streamlined, not too "high-tech", almost "solid-state pocket/desktop radio" look (in old-fashioned terms). The "hardcover" analogy is apt. It's a bit heavier than the book, mainly due to the need to have a big enough battery inside. Silly or not, the weight gives it a solid and well-made feel when carried. It rests well on a flat surface with the lid closed (it wobbles a bit when the lid is closed, e.g. when loading without playing). Like HiFi is a relative thing. It's certainly not "piercing" or "boomy", but it reproduces audible bass and high frequencies. Somehow it sounds like it "should sound" like it looks: not too little, not too much; precisely. It fills a niche in my multiroom audio ecosystem. I have multiple speakers in multiple locations that connect wirelessly over my home network to an iTunes library hosted on my desktop iMac using Apple AirPlay. As a result, I can listen to this music library (which consists primarily of 100+ CDs copied (losslessly) to this library, plus internet radio stations) from various locations around my house. No two places have the same sound quality, and my ear adjusts to that as the "price" for multi-room convenience (including remote control via Apple's "Remote" app on my iPod touch). SoundLink II is not fully compatible with this ecosystem as it is not compatible with AirPlay (Bose releases another compatible product), but expands the ecosystem. This is because the iPhone, some iPods and iPads (and other brands of portable devices) support short-range Bluetooth communication (inside the room as well as at home via Wi-Fi). So, in places other than my indoor AirPlay locations (like a basement, detached garage, deck, patio, or other room in the house), I'm pretty much set up with SoundLink and my iPod. I'm not interested in rocking pool parties (I don't have a pool), but it plays loud enough for me (even outside). The battery life seems sufficient for my type of use, and it charges fairly quickly (a couple of hours). The charger/power adapter is compact. The SoundLink BlueTooth seems very reliable and connects quickly to my iPod touch or iPad. With the SoundLink on my nightstand or bed and the iPad on my (back) chest, streaming video and audio from the NetFlix app makes for a great personal cinema system. What's not to like? Falling asleep to music is nice too. I ignored my audiophile claims and bought one. No regret.
