Review on Xantrex 84 2030 00 LinkLite Battery Monitor by Bill Russett

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very good product, a little less than perfect

LinkLite battery monitor installed on boat with two batteries. One bank is an AGM 31 group starter battery and the other bank is a house bank consisting of 2 AGM 8D. I never knew how much was left in the house bank until I installed this and that is the main reason I bought it. It is very useful and worth the money. As good as it is, I think they could make the device even better and more extensible. 1) It actually only controls one battery. (related to consumed ampere-hours and percent charge). It "monitors" the voltage of the second bank, but that's about it. This is normal and I found out after watching a YouTube review video, but the gauges and information sound like he could do two pots. I realize I could buy 2 of these to control the amp hours of both banks but this works fine, it was the house bank that worried me as it drains the most. I think they could design a device that could be expanded to multiple banks with multiple shunts. But for what it is, it works well. 2) The connection kit is separate. While I think you could make your own and save a few bucks, I highly recommend you just buy the kit. It has to be part of the total package. The connection kit is overpriced, but you get the color-coded twisted pair cables you need, along with fused ends and instructions for easy installation. If you have ever worked in the hold of a boat, performing electrical installations this set is not a luxury but a necessity. 3) The menu structure is simple and the display clear. 4) The instructions were clear but could have been made clearer. Also, I prefer instructions that don't have multiple languages on the same page. Print out instructions in multiple languages so I can dispose of what I don't need. Sailors tend to keep the instructions for everything installed on their boat and don't need to keep anything in a foreign language. It is also possible to set the alarm and ignition of the generator, but I have not used either of these functions. But I haven't seen any instructions on how to use these functions either. I think, for this money it is very useful. Finally you can see actual instantaneous wattage and voltage and track consumption in amp hours. You can enter your bank's rating in ampere-hours and they will calculate the remaining percentage. It would be nice if they added battery temperature monitoring. Some alternators have sensors that adjust the field strength if the battery gets too hot, but I want to see the temperature in degrees so I know what's going on. In my case I also added a second ammeter just to monitor overall performance. Generator. Now I can see exactly how much is being used and where it is going, how much is being used and what the battery level is. That's all. I think it's a very good device, very useful and worth the money. But I think it could be a little bit better. It would be nice if they added a battery temperature sensor.
