Pleasantly surprised by the results - Description of the method used

I used this product on the advice of the Catalina Direct DVD when repairing the keel of a C-22 sailboat. I used a Makita 4.1/2" angle grinder to remove as much rust as I could from the cast iron keel down to bare metal. There were scarred areas that looked like decay that were inaccessible so they were left as is. as is. I painted one side of the keel with 81773 Rust Treatment and let it dry. It turned the keel to a beautiful black color and I was delighted with the results. However, the next day the surface appeared brittle. Try to clean the surface in Preparing for an epoxy barrier "roughening" caused the product to chip where it was applied to bare metal (resins and putty products yet to be applied). I have a 12" x 12" square West System 105/205 marine epoxy applied to sample area and allowed to dry.I then returned with various tools to try and remove the epoxy.impressed with the quality of the ve bond. I was able to scrape the metal down to the streak with a screwdriver and hammer, but attempts to "remove" the epoxy from the metal were unsuccessful. I've tried using paint scrapers and even a razor scraper. The epoxy itself does not bond to metal and I am confident the product will perform as advertised. I don't claim to be a chemist but I believe the epoxy either soaked into the Permatex product or soaked it into the epoxy. Many users have complained that it is not suitable for bodywork. I don't think that's correct. The product is not suitable for direct weather influences. Some kind of primer is required before applying the paint. My experience has been with epoxy and I assume an epoxy primer will do, but other types may work as well. Unfortunately, the Permatex website is pretty much useless when looking for answers. I would suggest testing the partition and see what happens.
