The QC department sucks on AFE!

While this cover looks great once installed, get ready for a Saturday to install this three hour job. I hope the folks at AFE read this. Fire your quality control department. All of them. I spent almost 3 hours getting this cover ready to fit as if it should have come in the box from the factory, after receiving this cover the device case did not survive delivery. Opening the box sounded like I had a box full of rocks. Luckily the upper seam of the box was taped 3 times otherwise I would have had to switch to HD. When I opened the box, inventoried all the hex screws and washers, looked at the lid, my excitement ended there, the o-ring is only 1/16th smaller. After pushing it into the milled grove, it will pop out at the final corner. I had to take a heat gun and "heat" the ring to hold it in place. I hope it didn't jump out when I installed the screws. If so, I'll update this post with photos of the leak. Wizmer reads the instructions and says it comes pre-installed from the factory. Attached is a picture from the installation guide. I spent hours looking at the AFE site, message boards, hell, anything that had either a torque rating or a tight fit 🤷🏼. I wrapped it in teflon tape and twisted it until I was afraid something would break. Fortunately, the size of the nozzle is the same as that of the heating element 😉. If you look at the picture you can see it's not all the way down. There were rough edges from the casting on the inside of the lid that I had to file away. Luckily it's aluminum. I grabbed a green cleaning pad and cleaned the brakes to get that shit out. I understand the cost cutting in packaging but the instructions looked like they were printed on a home copier (8x11) and folded/stitched. AFE, how about you list the torques next to the parts list because listing them in general instructions with no picture captions sucks when your hands are covered in crap. Hex head screws, some kind of LockTite? The original screws have blue thread lock so given AFE's track record I reinstalled the blue one. Remove the inch-lb AND ft-lb torque wrenches (pan wrenches). Finally, the top screws and top fill hole (see picture) help set the tools in place. Top fill port, 50 ftlbs, with 1/2" square socket, good luck with a ft-lb torque wrench over it to tighten. I had to lie under the oil pan and reach the front of the axle to balance the torque wrench and 1/32 out twisting and turning to get to 50 ftlbs which I could never get to due to the limited space. I was close but I stopped. I just "checked" for leaks with no drips. The sight glass is great at that, to indicate liquid levels, but heck, AFE, not everyone has a lift.

Pros
  • Built in external fins, magnetic drain plug and large oil sight glass with calibration screw set to factory fluid level
Cons
  • Functionality
