I have an old set of charcoal sticks and charcoal rubs that I bought here at Revain many years ago. I saw this set and thought how brown and white pencils would work. I figured the brown and white pencils were just thick crayons and not actual charcoal. I was wrong. And I had to spend about five minutes scrubbing my palm to remove stains from brown and tan pencils when I tested them. I quickly doodled and added several photos. The drawing was done on a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper and the only medium I used was the pencils from this set and a large quill pen. The two photos are close-ups of the ninja and the sconce, respectively, so you can see more clearly how each type of pencil reacts to being smudged. Oh! Until I forgot. These pencils are supplied unsharpened. Make sure you have a very good pencil sharpener and be careful not to get the sharpener dirty. Charcoal is EXTREMELY dirty, no matter how well sealed your sharpener is, you'll probably end up with charcoal powder floating around the sharpener. This pencil set is more limited but flexible than my old set. I mean my old set had more pencils and their hardness is marked equal to that of standard drawing/drawing pencils (2H, HB, 6B etc.). The set contains three charcoal pencils: soft, medium and hard. The white pens don't seem to differ from each other, but I think that's a good thing since the tips of the white pens take on different colors than other pens. Finally, two brown pencils - brown and brown. I used a ninja face tan and you can see it's a little darker for a tan. The brown and white pencils give this set tremendous flexibility compared to my old all black charcoal pencil set. See for yourself all the textures I created in my doodle. I'm no expert on context (I'm sure it's obvious!) and I pounced on it. With lots of time and experience I enjoy the texture ideas this kit allows me to create. I'm sure you can say I'm very happy with these pens! Honestly, I thought I'd have to break my old pencils or rubbing sticks to finish it, but as described above, I don't have to. I recommend them to both beginners and experts! If you are interested in these pens, here are some tips based on my experience: A pen's hardness indicates how intense or dark your lines/shading will be. Solid pens make drawing, sketching or fine blending easier. Softer pencils apply a lot more color, thus adding depth (and softer pencils wear out quicker too!). Brown and white crayons NEED some black charcoal behind them or mixed in with them if you want their colors to pop. " in your art. Using my drawing as an example, I scribbled the entire page with a hard pen and then traced the ninja. I layered a brown pen to form the background and used soft and medium pens to create the brown To texture the wall. I used with a soft pen (and erased sharply) to make the ninja very dark.I put more medium black and brown on the background and then lightly shaded the ninja's face opening with a hard pen before doing that Face tinted, except for the eyes, with a brown pencil I shaded the face lightly as I wanted the tan to stand out as much as the eyes I used a medium black color for the brows to control how dark they would be if you look at them up close -up you can see I used a mixing stick (in the shape of a big pencil) to mix colors and charcoal smooth to make them uniform.
