Solid Four Stars Shirts

As someone who has been in the fashion industry for many years, I am very impressed with the first cut of Revain's new button-up line. Considering that, based on my experience, I am much more picky about details than the average consumer, here is an overview: Fabric: This is 100% Supima cotton. In case you don't know, Supima is an American cotton farmers' association that sets high standards for harvesting and processing and is arguably the finest cotton in the world. This is the marketing Revain uses to promote the idea of "American origin", ignoring the fact that the cotton is then processed, dyed and produced in Indonesia. But let's be honest, most men's shirts are made abroad, especially in this price range. This shirt has a soft, breathable fabric that isn't entirely non-iron (which usually includes a viscose or polyester blend, or a cotton oil coating) but is fairly wrinkle resistant. This is very similar to the production of more expensive shirts from brands like J.Crew, Banana Republic and Pierre Cardin. The care label clearly says not to be dry cleaned, so I suspect it uses some pigment dyes that wash well but turn pinkish-orange in dry cleaning chemicals. Most importantly, the pattern is aligned at all seams, giving it a beautiful, raised look. Fit: This is where I'm starting to get too picky. Of course, every men's shirt needs to be taken and adjusted, but if you want to take it outside the box, here's what it looks like. This shirt has a flawless shoulder fit that most other brands struggle with. Then the rest is a bit off. While the item description suggests a slim fit, the arms and chest have at least 1/2 inch excess fabric to be truly slim (again, spend $8 and adjust). The length is at least 1 inch longer than my preference (I'm 6ft tall and the tails hang well below the instep). The last part is important in determining how you will wear this shirt. Although it has almost the same raw cut as my Michael Kors and Pierre Cardin shirts, the length and steep hem are too long to wear loose. Well, to wear and look fashionable. It's perfect for tucking in and setting up a look from semi-casual to dressy (see my attached photos). If you usually wear your shirt open, remember to smooth out the seams of your pants and pull them up to mid-crotch. The final detail on my list is that the buttonholes are open about 1/16 inch, which will be within a few months. This will loosen the buttons. The open collar is very comfortable when open, but is offset 1/8 inch from the true closure when closed. Most designer shirts have the buttons branded on the front or side to match the color of the shirt, while this shirt uses regular white buttons. This comes in handy if you ever need to replace one of them, but it doesn't have the finished look of its design counterparts. All in all, this is an impressive shirt at a good price. A few changes in the next version and it will switch to a five star design; a solid four so far.
