The edging is thick and sturdy and was easy to install. You can install it with the scalloped edge at the top or if you want a straight edge, just invert it. I used this along the top of a retaining wall so that watering would be easier. I actually used a Cobra garden tool to dig the trench instead of a shovel. It is a good idea to have moist ground to do this. Since the edging is all one length, it is a bit unwieldy until you get it in your trench. Tap it in with a hammer and push your soil or mulch back up around it. The instructions say to place the stakes 4 ft. apart. Well, mine only arrived with 2 stakes which was a disappointment so I will need to find those elsewhere. Cutting the edging was fairly easy with a battery-powered jig saw.
