An important detail is missing from the instructions. The clips have a small protrusion on the inside, there is a groove on the outside of the clip to show where the protrusion is on the inside. When mounting clamps to bars, you MUST align the groove on the outside of the clamp with the grooves in the bars (the bars have grooves around them every few inches). Aligning the slot on the clip with the slot on the stem ensures that the rib on the inside of the clip fits into the slot on the stem, locking the clip in place. You may need to adjust the position slightly until the comb sits in the groove on the post. If the groove is not aligned, the inner cleat will not fit in the strut groove and the clip will appear undersized. Attempting to assemble the shelf this way will not work, hence the negative feedback from people who relied on incomplete instructions. The good news is that now that you know how the clamps work, you can easily assemble the shelves in about 10 minutes. The shelves are high quality, durable and great value but the instructions don't explain how the clamps work which is why many people wasted miserable time assembling these shelves. A few sentences in the instructions on how the clamps work would have prevented this. Enjoy!
