They definitely need to be locked

I saw a question where they asked if they need to be locked by hand and the answer was they might be but there is no need to press Simply retracting the red button and strap firmly and securely is highly misleading. they MUST BE HAND TIGHTENED. I used it to transport my two motorcycles in about 6 hours. In the past I've only ever used ratchet straps, but I was looking forward to the extra retractable straps and they're always missing so I didn't have to tie them. My experience with them is that they're definitely comfortable and would be great for tying down small light items, but if you're using them for something heavy like a motorcycle or similar they don't hold as tight as traditional ratchet straps. Usually after tying down my bikes I stop for the first 20-30 miles to check everything and may have to pull a couple up due to weight shift etc. With them I had to re-tighten them at every stop, they had to be tightened the whole trip. I'm not sure if they were slowly loosening part of the strap or stretching, but they didn't work as well as a traditional ratchet strap. Also, my bikes moved a lot more in the trailer than with traditional straps. I used my regular seat belts on the way home and the bikes were noticeably safer. In my experience they're very comfortable for small loads, but they're not that strong for anything of any weight.
