Review on πŸ–±οΈ Discover the Stylish Microsoft Surface Arc Mouse in Light Grey - CZV-00001 by Jon Johnson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Missing features but sleek design and very portable

As a techie and longtime gamer, I've tried various PC accessories. When it comes to mice, lately I've settled on the Logitech G600 MMO mouse, which is great for both gaming and productivity on my desktop. I recently bought a Surface Book for travel/school/laptop. I like the trackpad as it's the best out of any device I've used - it's spacious, accurate, and supports a decent amount of multi-touch gestures that are really, really neat. However, I wanted a portable mouse for precise and easy gaming, but I needed something lightweight, portable, and wireless. I was also specifically looking for a flatter mouse that fits comfortably in my laptop bag without a bulge. So I decided to try the Surface Arc Mouse (light gray to match my book). Design: 4/5 - The design of the mouse is slim, minimalist and creative. I have to thank the Microsoft team for making the foldable mouse which is a great portable mouse solution that is easy to pack. It's also quite aesthetic. However, I have put an end to the one button design. While I understand that portability is the primary purpose of this mouse, having to lift all but one finger to right-click (or drag an extra finger for a middle-click) is impractical. Not to mention that I can't play shooters since I can't hold down the right mouse button to aim. However, I knew that when I bought it. Performance: 5/5 - I didn't have enough mouse time to investigate the Bluetooth connectivity issues that other reviewers have mentioned. The mouse is very comfortable and easy to use (it's incredibly easy to pair) and I love that it's Bluetooth, which doesn't require an extra dongle or cable. The tracking takes a bit of getting used to as the sensor is at your fingertips and not in the middle of the mouse - this mouse made me realize how much I use my wrist, palm and side fingers to make precise movements. However, tracking is acceptable once you get used to it. Properties: 2/5. My biggest concern is that this mouse is very limited, especially when compared to the Surface trackpad. Before I get into that, I'd like to talk about the pros: the widespread touch scrolling is fantastic and well implemented in my opinion, and I appreciate being able to change sensitivity/direction with the mouse and keyboard center. I also like that I can have multiple fingers and only have to move one finger to scroll. However, some design choices made by Microsoft were a bit questionable, namely the one-button design (without enabling click-to-click functionality). I have to lift my other fingers to right-click and I have to drag my ring finger over the mouse to center-click (another MKC feature). I also can't click the left and right mouse button at the same time, neither can I click the middle mouse button (which is usually fine since you can scroll when you click). However, what worries me the most is the lack of touch gestures like those available on the touchpad and the lack of mouse options. I'd love to be able to use three or four finger gestures to switch apps or control music, and I really think a mouse could be a lot better if it were possible. Score: 3/5 - Ultimately, I would argue that this mouse costs more than other Bluetooth portable mice for a number of reasons: slim design, flex feature, touch scrolling, and Microsoft branding. In terms of raw performance, many other similarly priced mice will do significantly better than this one. I personally think I paid a bit more than the mouse was worth ($63), but for me it was worth it as a fun gadget with a nice design that I can safely toss in my laptop bag. I intend to use it a little longer before updating my review, at this point I think I can say whether it was really worth it or not.
