Review on Top-Performing Eightwood Dual Band VHF UHF Ham Mobile Radio Antenna PL259: Boost Your Ham Radio Transmitting Range with Magnetic Base & 5M Cable! by Brooke Stolen

Not designed for VHF and UHF ham bands

I purchased this antenna for use with my DMR VHF/UHF ham radio in the car. The antenna is not branded. The base is labeled Eightwood and there is no documentation in either package so there is no resource to determine which bands this antenna is intended to operate on or what the expected VSWR should be. I have attached photos of the frequency sweeps I took this antenna down when it was mounted on the roof of my car with the coax cable routed as I would use it. UHF amateur radio bands except VHF 147 MHz. With an SWR of 2:1, 1/2 of the energy emitted by the radio is reflected back and the radio's amplifier must dissipate this energy as heat. This will likely damage the amplifier's final stage and cause it to produce a weaker signal over time. I have not tested this antenna outside of the amateur radio bands, so I cannot say which band it is suitable for. It should actually come from an unnamed manufacturer. One thing to note about the magnet base is that the bottom material covering the base is a cloth-like material, a very thin and flimsy material that resembles the texture of flannel. I would expect this material to pick up any dust or dirt that may be present and cause the car's finish to deteriorate over time. I recommend all hobbyists not to use this antenna on a vehicle.
