Hoping this will prevent the fridge from being repaired

Bought this for my LG fridge (Kenmore Elite) because the control board was faulty and it was expensive. The fridge was actually just over 5 years old and hooked up to a cheap surge protector when it started having all sorts of icing problems - leading to a range of repairs from a new linear compressor, new sensors, a new capacitor core and a new control panel. While some of these repairs are obviously not related to power surges, I just wanted to take an extra step to protect my investment in a $3,500 unit that I had to spend another $1,000 on repairs after 5 years, which would be much higher if it wasn't the fact would be some of it was warranty work!) The question remains widespread as to whether a fridge needs a surge protector, and I agree that older fridges didn't have it. But having seen the control board on these new devices I would say yes it is definitely needed! I'll probably never know if this device actually helps extend the life of the device, but it's inexpensive enough to take a chance.

Pros
  • Two diagnostic indicators (LEDs): Power on/Protection OK and Wire fault.
Cons
  • boring packaging
