Removing the clear trim from the lights without cutting the flex takes a little practice but is doable. Be sure to remove enough material so the connection points line up with the pins. Adjusting the light strip to the correct spacing, keeping it straight and clamping is difficult but doable. I had to open and adjust several times to keep all four connections strong. If not fully aligned, the external connections were unreliable. After playing with this for 30 minutes I decided to just solder the wires between the strips that were cut to get a complete connection. If you don't have a soldering iron, this is probably your best bet and you can get it working. Fortunately, if you're just using them to create a rectangle behind the TV, you only need to do this once and then they should keep working.
