I bought two of these specifically for a recent trip as I wanted a second one in case one gets lost along the way. Finally, bags are subjected to rough handling during loading and unloading at airports. However, if *both* fall out of the pack even though they're meant for added protection, that's a different story altogether. assumed airport security looked in my bag and found it wrapped inside. Not this case. The second strap was more telling as my bag came out and was pulled behind the side handle I had threaded it through. The buckle held, but the strap was completely loose. I've had these straps before - the last one lasted almost ten years. I know exactly how to tone them up and make them work, and these recent purchases work the same way. The straps on them are slick and don't hold the fastening buckle in place well, which I think is why both come off so easily. it wasn't hollow plastic. Before I even realized that these were poor quality items, I took one look at the buckle and thought it wouldn't stand up to too much commotion at the airport. Save money. Obviously *no* strap beats these straps.
