This is very useful for determining the internal temperature of the meat to ensure it is at a safe serving temperature and is not overcooked. The thermometer was immediately ready for use and even had an additional battery. Out of the box he could use it and it worked fine. This replaces the old-fashioned analog thermometer that required you to wait for the reading to rise to a "range" where the temperature was safe. The instant read, easy to read digital display is a great upgrade. It even has a magnet so you can always have it handy when grilling. Overall worth the price I paid.
