Bought this for my wife to use as a backup drive. She likes having things to hold/see and it was easier than trying to teach her about a network backup drive. I bought a USB 3.1 cable that connects to the drive and the laptop. It is very easy to use and the laptop (MacBook Air) recognizes the drive immediately. I set Time Machine to start as soon as it was detected, so backing up their files was very easy for them. I haven't used the outer case as it hasn't been dragged from place to place and haven't had any issues with it so far.
