Update: I've had this in my tank for a while and can visually see how much work it's doing. It does an excellent job of filtering out feces and dirt that would otherwise get caught in the filter itself. This helps that I don't have to clean the filter mats in the device as often and the components get slimy or dirty from deposits. I clean it about every two weeks by taking it out, squeezing it out and hitting it on the edge of the sink. Don't skip the last step if you want to remove anything that got into the sponge. It also helped my shrimp and fish not get sucked in. Fits Marineland Bio Wheel 150 even if the filter tube is square and the sponge is round.
