I took these poles on a couple of hikes in the mountains of southern Utah. Here are my impressions: The pens are good pens. This is a textured cork material. Lies well in the hands. The bar is strong, the locking mechanism is strong and supportive. Tips - various rubber tips are good. That's probably why I bought it. I haven't seen that with other brands at this price. design is good. They look great if you like the look of trekking poles. Sticks make you look like an idiot no matter what. The only downside is that the shock absorbers are really there, despite what some reviewers have said. They are activated by turning the center pole counterclockwise. This gives an extra 3/4" of travel. While they're there, they're almost useless, for the following reason: when you stick the bars into the ground, there's almost inevitably some bar rotation as you move up move. With a grippy rubber tip on the bottom and the twist that takes place on your wrist, the damping mechanism twists back clockwise and disengages. While it's easy to turn on, it doesn't stay on. It's frustrating and ties up some functionality into a near perfect core For that reason if I have to replace these sticks I will not take them again One more thing I bought these sticks to protect my ankles while hiking which I have stretched a couple of times Both hikes had moments where my foot rolled and I felt my weight transfer directly to the stick, which helped prevent another sprain On one such occasion I carried my child in a backpack. Could be bad For this reason I will continue to travel with them whenever possible.
