There is a chip in the cable and my computer recognized it as soon as I plugged it into the USB port. Before that I downloaded a program called CHIRP which is an application for programming amateur radio stations. I programmed a Baofeng BF-F8HP radio. As soon as I connected my radio to the cable and switched it to an unused frequency, CHIRP recognized my radio. A window would open asking for the radio brand and model number. Don't worry about the assigned Windows virtual port number, Windows will figure it out and assign the port number. DOWNLOAD your configuration FIRST. You can then change the repeater channels, offsets, etc. and upload back to the radio.
