sweatshirt. It's soft and thick enough. I ordered a large for my six year old son who is medium size. The sweatshirt says it's a 7 so I thought it would be great to maybe give it an extra season. Then I picked it up and immediately started having doubts. As soon as my son came back from school, I put it on, the upper body was too short, as were the arms. Needless to say, I was a bit concerned. I jokingly tried it on my 4 year old son who is taller than average and it fits perfectly. So if you have a big four-year-old or a little five-year-old, take the big one and you'll be golden. I think the small sizes should be gloves.
