A very common spot for MK4 (99-04) 2.0 VWs to be phased out. I have replaced them on 4 different Jettas! Because it is on the same side of the head as the oil filler cap, if oil is spilled while filling, it can run down the side of the head and into the o-ring behind this flange, causing leaks. A simple replacement is to drain the coolant. , remove the pair of coolant hoses along with the coolant temperature sensor, and the flange is held in place by only two socket head cap screws. Removing the air box (easy. 3 x 10mm bolts) makes this a lot easier with the extra space.
