Received a roll of window film today and spent about 15 minutes trying to separate the liner from the film with no success. With my combination of mediocre eyesight and short nails, that just didn't happen. I took out a roll of clear tape and cut two 3 inch segments. On the sticky side of the pieces of tape I folded over 1/2 inch. Then I attached one piece of tape to the corner of the film and the other piece of tape to the corner of the backing. The folded portions of the tape extend beyond the edges. Using the folded sections of ribbon, I easily separated the two sides. Voila! Instant success. The film looks really good on my window.
