This carrier comes with straps for almost every carrying scenario you can think of. This is a well made and thought out product. Our cat loves it so far! It is important to follow the training instructions so that your pet, especially the cat, gets used to this thing. I would recommend waiting at least a month or so before taking a cat on the road. Since our little one is still in the "learning phase", I haven't used the backpack function yet. However, it's worth noting that this is primarily a pet carrier. That means it wasn't made for YOU. The backpack straps are great for their purpose, but it doesn't look like carrying them will be like you'll be wearing in the woods for two weeks. I think that this is the right choice of the manufacturer. After all, your pet must love it! I've seen some other totes that are more like backpacks - ones with bubble windows etc. It looks like they appeal to the owner first - they show the pet but lack space for the pet to lay down. I haven't used it so I can't be sure. I can say that this carrier became an instant hit with our cat. The fact that there's a door at either end is important - our cat was originally able to crawl through it, and that helps with exploration. I would classify our cat as medium - 12.2 pounds - and he is comfortable in his small size. He can also turn around and stick his head out of the upper window. Look at the picture - when he lies down he pretty much fills the floor which is normal for a cat as he feels secure. add to this post.
