Background: I am an artist and I wanted to try glass fusing to see if I would like this product. I did quite a bit of research on melting glass in both microwave ovens and traditional glass furnaces before deciding to buy this furnace. For those who want to know what to expect beforehand, there are many tutorial videos and tutorial websites/forums aimed at non-specialists that are really helpful. The negative reviews were only for the instructions, I was happy to find more detailed instructions online. Fuseworks, Paragon, Hotbox, and other well-known brands of these microwaves post their instruction manuals online, and their instructions are more complete than the simple instructions that came with this set, which is adequate but basic. The instructions that came with it said I should use an oven wash, which I did because I make sure my supplies are in good condition. However, many manuals from other brands skip this step. (It's recommended in some guides, though.) The "oven paper" that came with it was more like oven fiber, so I ordered some Thinfire paper and some clear COE 90 glass to use as a cover with the glass that came with it. I also used some 1/2 inch oven rods between the microwave tray and the oven because I read that someone accidentally fused their glass microwave tray to the oven floor due to a bad project. My first fuse was a huge success, although it was a simple, hands-on project, I took all the green and blue confetti glass shards, crushed them into a frit, gathered them into a tight pile, and fused them into a free-form marble- Blank that I can now decorate the glass pieces, trying to achieve stickiness or contour merging. It took me 15 minutes in a 600w microwave for the full fuse my concoction produced, although I did melt it down a bit (low and slow minimizes bubbles so ignore the advice, microwave at least 800-1000 W to use Mine is old The 600 watt microwave oven has held up well to the extra time). Enjoy it. Yes, additional investments are recommended (lead tongs, washer, thin paper for firing, more glass), but if you know what you're getting into and consider that this set costs twice as much elsewhere, you get all you need for the set same price as buying this set through branded retailers.
