This carrier is awesome! Last year I bought another backpack carrier to go camping with my cat. This porter was terrible. It was heavy and uncomfortable. It ruined my posture and my back hurt terribly. This carrier is MUCH BETTER. Waist and chest straps are of great importance. It can be worn like a hiking backpack and puts all the weight on your hips instead of your back. If you find it uncomfortable I recommend playing around with it for a while to find the right fit. You might even be looking for hiking gear. My cat complains for a while when I put it on for the first time, but she's getting used to it and seems to enjoy it. If I have the top down she'll stick her head out and occasionally look around, but she'll stay in the bag. I was expecting her to pop out when I open the front, but for now she's just sticking her head out and looking around. I wouldn't leave the front open anywhere unless I was content with its absence. Inside there is a strap to attach your pet. My old backpack also had a strap, but I think the pet would hang itself if it jumped out while attached to it. This one goes all the way down, so I don't think it's a big problem. I haven't used it. Instead, I keep my cat in a harness and keep her on a leash in case she wants to jump out and explore. Also, it would be nice to add a few more buttons to turn it on and off. All in all, I'm very glad I got this. Update: I no longer leave the front window open. When my cat sticks its head out, it pulls its weight away from my body and hurts my back. She's still happy, peeping out of the net and sticking her head out from above.
