We have a small 7lb Shih Tzu and Maltese mix, I bought the small size. Our dog actually likes the harness, not the other one that has velcro, but since he has a square head rather than a round and pointed snout, I have trouble getting the harness over his head. Our dog loves to get outside and work and he knows he will be going to work when the harness comes out so he jumps on the couch and sticks his head in the harness. All I have to do is put it on his head and ears, plus it fits absolutely perfectly, and since she doesn't mind having it snug on his head, neither do we, but if your dog has a squarer big head and no things like that are snug on the head, I could see where could/would be an issue, maybe a larger size doesn't allow for the head hole that snug, and the body straps are adjustable to allow this to work. If your dog's shoulders are larger than his head and he has a more traditional long muzzle, I think that again won't be an issue, depending on whether your dog has an aversion to things that constrict or otherwise go over his head. Our dog is only 9 months old and has grown since we got this harness and I think he will be a size up in a few months because if his head gets bigger as he grows it will be too tight to fit to climb over her head. There is also a problem with long haired dogs like ours where because the coat hides that she is wearing a service dog vest we have a service dog ID card for her which we keep in a protective plastic case and keep with her tags on the hook. she is wearing a vest. It also brings a plus for the vest, there are two medal loops, one at the top of the vest and one at the bottom, it's handy for keeping the tags and ID out of the way of the rental.
