Review on πŸ“š Mission Style 3-Shelf Bookcase for a Relaxed Home by Joyce Keesling

Better than I expected

The good news is that this is real wood, not MDF or chipboard. It's not a very good wood and certainly not real walnut, but at least it doesn't crumble when you touch it. Note though that they spliced and glued the pieces together so I'm not sure how long these seams will last before breaking. However, seams are only part of the strength problem. The way it is assembled, and you assemble it yourself, is that the studs are inserted into the shelves from the side panels, the studs are the only thing holding the shelves. I wouldn't put more than 25 pounds on each shelf. I recommend using a good wood glue when assembling, so hopefully the shelves will be a bit stronger and the whole thing won't wobble either. The assembly wasn't too complicated, it took about an hour. As expected, the instructions are not very good. The finish is rough, a rough coat of stain with no sanding or top coat, but then again it at least looks like real wood and not wood grain vinyl laminate. This article is by no means to be classified as furniture, but it does not look cheap either. The nice touch is that they include a pack of real wood end caps to cover the screw holes. Most products these days just leave them visible or cover them with printed vinyl sticks on the lasts. I think for that price you get something nicer to look at than pressed cardboard furniture, and the assembled bookcase is good for souvenirs and a few light books.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Some bugs
