I installed a whole house filter between the incoming city line and the house. I have a lot of sand and sediment here in Florida that goes through the pipes from who knows where and collects who knows what before the water gets into my house. I have tried Whirlpool's more expensive solid cores and found that corrugated cores actually have more surface area to trap debris. It will discolor when exposed to direct sunlight, so make sure you have something on your device that will block the sun. Discoloration is not mold unless you leave it there for too long. Also, it depends on the number of people using the water in your home, the load on the washing machine, shower, etc. Even though the filter says it lasts 6 months, I always change mine, depending on your geographic location all of them 4 months and there is sand. at the bottom of the glass container. Since mine is glass, I can watch what's happening, but you have to protect it from the sun. Also, you may change this more or less frequently due to different seasons. Best value for money and I know my laundry and shower are clean.
