Following the instructions, after 5 minutes it started emitting a visible amount of smoke ALMOST. This cannot be seen without a perfectly placed flashlight or other light source. It starts pumping as soon as it is connected to a power source, regardless of the switch position. When it's on, it makes a slightly different sound, and eventually the same dull smoke appears. More like a puff of smoke. The device itself looks good, so unless you need a decent paperweight I'd recommend getting a different brand.
