My main need was an inexpensive geiger counter that could read beta and gamma rays in the background and also work with radiation levels that would be expected in a nuclear emergency. A secondary goal was to add GMCMAP.com to the radiation map of the world (via the web). The Geiger counter is USB charged and uses a built-in (rechargeable) lithium battery. The printed instructions are quite limited and need improvement. The downloadable PDF manual (about 35 pages long) is much better but needs improvement (poor English and better organization). A Wi-Fi connection requires the typical information you would expect (geiger counter ID info, username, user number). You must register your device before receiving some of this information. Enter the SSID for your router and the router password. If the password you use for your router is longer than 25 characters, you will receive an error message and will need to shorten your router password. It's tedious because each of your Wi-Fi devices needs to be reset to a shorter password. Software on 500+ should have longer password field (registration) to solve this problem. I suggest you do a 500+ YouTube search for more help before attempting to connect to Wi-Fi. Overall the product is worth the money and works as advertised. It took me about a day to get everything working with all the bells and whistles I wanted. -- Be patient when working with this device -- it's worth the effort to take advantage of the various options (alerts, warnings, downloads, firmware updates, etc.). -- I forgot to mention that once Wi-Fi is working properly, you no longer need a computer running "Data Viewer" to upload data to the GMC Radiation Map. The device works standalone and has its own connection to the router via the Wi-Fi setting. You need to place the Geiger counter near a USB charger (connect via the included USB cable) so you don't have to worry about constantly recharging the battery manually.
