Review on ⌨️ All-Aluminum Wired Keyboard for Apple Mac OS: Plug-N-Play USB Connection, Numeric Keypad, iMac & MacBook Compatible - White by Dee Howard

Decent but not great

I needed some extra keyboards for some Mac minis, so naturally I looked for something that was directly compatible with Mac OS X, with some extra labeled brightness function keys . Volume, etc., but suitable for Windows if necessary. Since my old Logitech favorites (regular, full-size laptop keys, three-level backlight, well over $100) are no longer available, I took a closer look. It seems that chiclet keys are a new trend, copying Apple's style. I ordered a MacAlly and a Universal for $40 each. Pros: Full size. A little weighted so it doesn't move easily. Space grey, similar to other Macs. Cons: The lettering isn't bright white, but rather off-white and poorly/unevenly applied. The function and control buttons are in the wrong place. (can be changed in the software, but you don't have to, and you can't trust the label) Only on the right side there is a CAPS lock indicator. There are no adjustable feet to tilt the keyboard a bit. The spaces around the keys aren't as narrow as they could be. In some quick-typing tests, the keys worked well, were quiet, and comparable to previous-generation island-style Mac keyboards, albeit perhaps a slightly different size. Though it was Space Gray, consistent with current Mac systems; I send it back; and get another MacAlly, despite being a regular brushed metal (corresponding to previous generation systems). Next to the MacAlly keyboard, the bright white lettering looks like it's backlit compared to this one. Difficult to capture in a photo, but very noticeable live, even with a traditional keyboard closest to the light. I think functionally this keyboard can be perfectly fine, but for the same price I'll take a brand that's there, all the keys in place, a few extra LEDs, brighter lettering that doesn't look worn.

Pros
  • I'm holding my fists
Cons
  • Hard to say
