Too thin - excess paint falls under stencil

I used this stencil and when I removed the stencil excess paint continued to appear. I tried 3 different methods including spraying glue on the back of the stencil. The stencil should be thicker and less flexible. In the end I gave up and painted the whole template black, used it as a clock face and placed a white background behind it. See image.
