Review on Hurst 3916030 Billet Plus Short Manual Shifter for Chevrolet Camaro V8/V6 by Ryan Reiter
You will get a rattle if you don't install it.
If you do not put a rubber adhesive pad between the two parts of the shifter, a crack will appear. I still had some rattling afterwards but I put teflon tape on the screws and that stopped it completely and also prevented the screws from loosening which is a big problem.
