Want to get rid of the silver backing too?
The key is alkaline! The backing is aluminum and is easily removed by soaking in 1 1/4 cups water + 2 tablespoons lye for 5 minutes (this solution is caustic, use caution, wear gloves and safety glasses just in case. I have use a plastic spoon and rinse gems thoroughly with vinegar and water before handling). It doesn't harm the plastic and the results are great and perfect for a treasure chest or something. Decided to share my trick as other people don't seem to like the silver back either. Hope this helps someone! 😊
