Review on ViewSonic VX2235WM 22-inch Wide Monitor: Crisp 1680X1050 Resolution on a Wide Screen by Mike Dawson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Overall a good buy for me

As I work in graphic design/photoshop/etc I'll start with the bad points as this needs to be said first: 1. The brightness bleeds into the screen at the edges. Only bad if you use a lot of black in design or in games.2. As others have said: there is a problem with uneven brightness, which only gets worse when you look up. (e.g. a black and gray image will be entirely black). However, tilting the monitor down slightly seems to solve most problems.3. I would ask for a contrast ratio of 1000:1 like other monitors in this price range do (OTOH, they have their own funny problems). The point step of 0.0282 is the average. For $399 I was hoping for 0.0270. Okay, I won't go for that stroke and the text and graphics look crisp, but smaller dot spacing will always be better.5. At the top of the screen, the text has a slightly glowing anomaly. See also point 2, which also solves this problem. 6. Built-in controls and accessing and modifying them are a bit annoying; once you get used to it, you'll be fine. if only the OKR screen could help guide the user better.7. The monitor is a 6-bit display with dithering visible in darker gradients. If you use your monitor (or graphics card) to soften the image, it looks passable. But you might want to look elsewhere for a suitable screen (full color depth of 16.7 million colors). However, in some cases, this monitor may suit you. Best to try. That's all the problems I've seen so far. On the plus side: 1. 22 inches is really very good. 2. It's a widescreen format - SQUEE! 3. CD comes with monitor profile files to simplify calibration - a must for anyone working with printed graphics. 4. It's affordable given its flaws, a little fiddling around makes for a more attractive display 5. 3 year warranty on parts, labor and screen 6. 5ms sync speed is GREAT for gaming 8ms is too slow and introduces weird ghosting but it's a dream come true in the nightmare of LCD inconsistencies, I have to say that this Viewsonic model makes switching to an LCD monitor practically a thing.

Pros
  • 10x21x19 inches
Cons
  • Bad refresh rate.
