When buying Columbia down jackets, pay attention to the down fill number - on this coat it's 590, I think it's one of the thinnest down jackets. filling 650, 740, 860; The higher the filling, the fuller and possibly warmer the fur will be. This is a very thin coat. But I wanted the warmest, fitted, low-profile coat I could find, one that compresses and packs very little as I travel constantly, and a coat that's a little more dressy than a regular ski parka, so I'll keep that in mind. TurboDown/OmniHeat jackets have a reflective silver inner layer that helps retain body heat like a fancy soft emergency blanket. It works - the coat itself feels warm on the inside when I take it off. Also I like the silver inside, looks cool. But I wanted a coat that wasn't super shiny on the outside. If you look at some other models, the black color looks like a garbage bag. I emailed Colombia before I bought it and they confirmed that this finish is matte. However, some other styles have a ripstop outer shell if that's important to you. I really wanted an attached hood and this one is great. It doesn't have a drawstring hood and doesn't need one. The hood stays closed even in the crazy constant North Dakota wind. The zipper is made of plastic so that it does not freeze to the chin when the hood is closed. It has an adjustable drawstring waist. When I bought it I wanted the sleeves to have powder cuffs like a ski jacket, but they only have inelastic piping, but that's ok, I don't miss powder cuffs. Some people have mentioned the feathers falling out, but I only had a few feathers. No problem. This is a really good quality coat. While it was good against the cold, this coat won't work well in rain or sleet (I have a large, super fancy ski parka for skiing - this coat worked well on a Bluebird ski day, but that's not its purpose). I'm 5ft 4" and 140lbs with a medium chest and I bought the large size thinking it would fit over a sweater or hoodie and it fits. As I'm tall, the arms are a bit long, but that's not a problem. They stay where they should be with the cuff. I definitely need to wear a sweater or sweatshirt underneath on the coldest days. I've spent a lot of time in North Dakota this winter and it's been a pretty cold winter; There were literally weeks where the day was well below zero (f) and reached -45f several times due to the wind. going for a walk, traveling in a plane or car, shopping for groceries or shoveling snow (so many shovels.) this coat exceeded my expectations i am 100% satisfied with this coat.
