Review on Line Relay G30 Wireless Guitar by Theresa Mcdonald

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Amazing sound, fragile design

Excellent sound quality. The battery life is excellent. But the mechanical quality is a bit weak. The Line 6 Relay G30 preserves all dynamic content, doesn't add extra noise and acts as a great buffer. It has absolutely great sound quality. Put it in front of your favorite touch-sensitive tube amp and it sounds just like it would with a cable. There's a lot coming from analog, tube amps, anti-digital modelling, snob. The only problem with this product is the poor mechanical design. If you care about your gear or know how to mod something, I highly recommend it. If you're tossing your stuff around or doing a lot of work, it might not be as reliable as you need it to be, but the sound quality can outweigh the extra effort. At first glance, the hip pack appears heavy and durable. The hinged battery door feels solid, well designed, and the belt clip feels very solid. Unfortunately, the battery cover is pretty flimsy. It contains a metal plate that completes the battery circuitry, but that metal plate is held in place with small fused plastic pins. These pins are also the only mechanical element holding the door latch against the pressure of the battery contact spring. This issue causes the G30 to lose power intermittently while driving. Another guitarist in my band also has a G30 and had the same problem. I dropped my G30 and the plate fell out completely along with the plastic spring latch. In addition, the attachment of the clip for the hip bag is rather wobbly. The clip itself is made of thick and durable spring metal. It attaches to a couple of different buttons on the back of the waist pack. Line 6 designed this so that you can change the orientation of the beltpack by removing the clip and putting it on a different set of buttons. The spring pressure is too high for the plastic buttons and one of them broke the first time. And since even the weakest button is common to both orientations, I could no longer mount the clip. I never contacted Line 6 because I urgently needed a G30 for a gig, so I just fixed it myself. We hope their support team resolves these issues properly. The price and sound quality outweigh the poor mechanical construction, so I'm still very happy with this unit.
