Where I live, it's nice to have warm socks in the house when it gets cold. I like the stretchy, comfortable wool blend for warmth and that fits without being too tight (I wear shoe size 14). They are perfect for that and since you have to fight for the perfect sock for that purpose every 2-3 years I have ordered more to keep on the shelf until I wear them out. I doubt they will last long in boots and hiking after years of serious hiking; For this I would recommend something more durable with more wool, but they have a nice thick sole and go up to halfway up my calves (I'm over 6ft) so they were exactly what I wanted.
