Review on Infinity Kappa 800W Audio Subwoofer by Brian Tompkins

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Affordable hi-fi subwoofer

I built two of these subwoofers and three boxes: Two 1.0cc punch boxes. Feet with 3" Flare "Aero" precision vents, rotated 45 Hz, with 1/2" MDF walls and corner braces. The third, for laughs and shit, was a sealed 0.5 cu ft 1 inch MDF box with heavy spacers just to hear how it would sound. I wish I had a second sealed box, but after Building Three I got lazy, so I digress. These recommendations are from the manual, but I modeled them in Bass-Box Pro because I thought I could do better. And so Infinity knew what they were doing and gave them the optimal answer. I feed them 450 watts from a Crown XLi1500. You should fill the bottom end for a pair of MMG Magnepans. I use a MiniDSP 2x4 for EQ/EQ and a UMIK-1 to measure room response. I replaced two BIC Formula F-12 which were loud but not very musical, much better for cinema/home theater. and is of course very subjective, but I like their sound, especially with Magnepans which are difficult to mix with many subwoofers. With a sine sweep, I can't tell when the subwoofers are dead and the speakers take over. These are only 8 inch budget subs so obviously they don't play very soft or loud but they do drop down to 35Hz before dropping out. rated them accurately (not exaggeratingly, as can be the case with most car audio equipment). I took them in my car but I prefer them at home. - Compared to oranges My previous system bottom tier was three Dayton Audio RSS390HO 15s which are obviously much better in fidelity/hi-fi but the Sundowns put them to shame in the SPL department. Training The most expensive system I've heard of was a pair of Wilson Audio Chronosonic XVX with a pair of Wilson Audio Subsonics, total system/room cost was $1.6 million. Line array setup. I showed off tons of gear from Klipsch, KEF, Paradigm, Vandersteen, Bowers & Wilkins, Focal, Magnepan, Martin Logan and McIntosh, as well as loads of headphones including flagship Sennheiser, Grado, Focal, AKG, Shure, Sony, and more. I have tons of headphones from the above companies plus a few others. I participate in audio competitions like Parts Express and Slamology; I like both premium SQ and sometimes extreme SPL.

Pros
  • Subwoofer
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
