Review on πŸ”Œ High-Performance Ubiquiti Networks Edgerouter Lite 3-Port Router for Advanced Connectivity by Marcus Consumers

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Strong and powerful if you know what you're doing

First off: This is, as everyone said, an extremely powerful/fast router. Don't let the small size (and price) fool you. I work in the IT department of a large corporate office, bought it for my home network and am now considering replacing our thousand dollar Cisco 4U routers with EdgeRouters. Set up was easy except for two small issues. The first problem was that I couldn't update the firmware via GUI or command line (both GUI and SSH) due to lack of memory, but I was able to use a console cable to remove the system image backup and update device. My device is 2018 but it comes with firmware 1.5. The current version is 2.6. The second problem I'm having for some reason is that several devices (all from Revain i.e. Ring cameras, Echo etc.) are not getting an IP address from ERL3, although it was difficult. -Reset and cleaned several times. I had to give them static IP assignments via their MAC. I assume this is an issue with the client devices. The speed on this thing is pretty damn good. Combined with CAT7, I finally get the full Gigablast up/down speed I'm paying for. I had no problems with ERL3 freezing or disconnecting. Important note: Do not use both eth1/2 ports in switch mode as this will affect your speed. Keep each on their own subnet and use a good gigabit switch. There are several basic wizards in the interface, but using them requires you to carefully review the settings applied, especially the firewall rules. There are many features that are not visible in the GUI and are available from the command line or console. One thing I really wish there was more presence in the GUI is the IPv6 settings; There are a few here and there, but you can't even specify IPv6 DNS servers for your DHCP servers in the GUI (you can in the CLI/console). There are tons of setup guides out there that even a slightly tech-savvy person can follow. Update: After playing around with it in my spare time for about a week, I found a few other "nuisances". Pretty much every router you buy for home use has a built-in (and usually automatic) ability to resolve local device hostnames. ERL3, which requires serious DNSMASQ configuration via CLI/SSH/console, required a full hard reset and reboot to get this working according to the official guide. I highly recommend sitting down and making a list of everything you need to set up and doing it in one fell swoop. It looks like the OS is "getting mad" when running multiple/incremental commit/save commands. Still not quite configured correctly with IPv6 WAN/DNS, but I tend to have my ISP (Residential Cox) not issuing the correct IPv6 prefix.

Pros
  • Many will
Cons
  • Some difficulties
